This World is not My Home: WiP Under-painting

  
   Step One: the under-painting on Slice Two: This World is not My Home. The foundation was laid down with Mauve gouache, followed by a layer of Iris Blue water-dye. The color is brushed in very thin layers, building the intensity not through thickness, but from layer after layer of tinting. It's a slow process, but one that I've used for many years with water-based materials.

  I developed the color alongside the monochromatic black wash of the character, and I was constantly adjusting both areas in relation to each other as I "bounced" between layer stages, allowing one part of the color to dry as I worked the on ink wash. Back and forth...

   The next stage I'll post will be with all the water-based mediums (see link below for example). This will introduce a lot more colors, textures, and atmosphere, as well as putting the character into a context. Establishing light and skin tone on the face will be done primarily in the final stage; Prisma colored-pencils.

  Throughout the set, a part of the composition will be monochromatic (such as the figure, in this piece), with the remainder being full color. Part of the challenge of the four images is exploring how that combination works...
