Sabriel Concept Sketch by giadrosich Sabriel Concept Sketch by giadrosich
Original Size: 7.5x10
Time: 1.5 hours
Medium: Pencil

Componate One: A few weeks ago, I started the Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix. The first book is titled "Sabriel," and I quickly moved on to the second (Lirael) and third (Abhorsen) in the series.
Since then, they have become some of my favorite books in what can best be described as dark fantasy; thrilling, imaginative, and original in scope and concept.

Componate Two: Usually whenever I sit down to work on a composition, I'll do a series of "warm-up" exercises to loosen up the hand and wrist.

Resulting In: As I was engaged in "loosening up," I soon found myself drawing Sabriel, whose weapons include seven bells of various sizes (and personalities) and a sword.
Keep in mind that this is only a concept sketch, and will be refined and modified further before the finished drawing that the ink will rest upon.

A special thanks goes out to :iconwoodenpress: for telling me about this wonderful series! If you haven't read them, do so.

Beautiful linework! I love the way you portray her in this picture... And the way the bell bandolier is drawn, and her clothing...

I fell in love with the book after reading it a few years ago. I found out that there was a whole SERIES just a little while ago, so I've been reading the rest. Garth Nix is great!

Thanks Yani, for your comments and all the faves! Nix became one of my favorite authors after reading the series, and I just wish I had the time to visually interpreting more of his characters and world. They are absolutely fascinating! :D In fact, sometimes I wish I had never read them, so I could have the joy of reading them all over again, lol. Of course, repeated reading does deepen ones understanding of the concepts and the thought behind the stories...

I really enjoy the perspective and the intricate use of hatching to bring out the form of the Dead thing and her costume. Well done!

Thanks so much for your comments and the fave on this one. I really wish I had more time to devote to exploring visually the fascinating world which Garth Nix has created here. I find some of the imagery wonderfully enticing. Unfortunately, my time is extremely constricted, and cannot devote more attention to (rather than an odd sketch here and there) the characters or settings.

Besides that, my books are in storage in America!! :XD:

That would indeed be a bit of a problem, since I assume you aren't at the moment, lol.

No problem at all. :]
