Sabriel Concept Sketch by giadrosich Sabriel Concept Sketch by giadrosich
Original Size: 7.5x10
Time: 1.5 hours
Medium: Pencil

Componate One: A few weeks ago, I started the Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix. The first book is titled "Sabriel," and I quickly moved on to the second (Lirael) and third (Abhorsen) in the series.
Since then, they have become some of my favorite books in what can best be described as dark fantasy; thrilling, imaginative, and original in scope and concept.

Componate Two: Usually whenever I sit down to work on a composition, I'll do a series of "warm-up" exercises to loosen up the hand and wrist.

Resulting In: As I was engaged in "loosening up," I soon found myself drawing Sabriel, whose weapons include seven bells of various sizes (and personalities) and a sword.
Keep in mind that this is only a concept sketch, and will be refined and modified further before the finished drawing that the ink will rest upon.

A special thanks goes out to :iconwoodenpress: for telling me about this wonderful series! If you haven't read them, do so.

Beautiful linework! I love the way you portray her in this picture... And the way the bell bandolier is drawn, and her clothing...

I fell in love with the book after reading it a few years ago. I found out that there was a whole SERIES just a little while ago, so I've been reading the rest. Garth Nix is great!

Thanks Yani, for your comments and all the faves! Nix became one of my favorite authors after reading the series, and I just wish I had the time to visually interpreting more of his characters and world. They are absolutely fascinating! :D In fact, sometimes I wish I had never read them, so I could have the joy of reading them all over again, lol. Of course, repeated reading does deepen ones understanding of the concepts and the thought behind the stories...

I really enjoy the perspective and the intricate use of hatching to bring out the form of the Dead thing and her costume. Well done!

Thanks so much for your comments and the fave on this one. I really wish I had more time to devote to exploring visually the fascinating world which Garth Nix has created here. I find some of the imagery wonderfully enticing. Unfortunately, my time is extremely constricted, and cannot devote more attention to (rather than an odd sketch here and there) the characters or settings.

Besides that, my books are in storage in America!! :XD:

That would indeed be a bit of a problem, since I assume you aren't at the moment, lol.

No problem at all. :]

Absolute fan of Garth Nix, and I say you've done justice to his character. I love the style this is in, especialy the use of detail and flat colours. Nice work.

Thank you so much for the watch and fave on this one, Sckry! I'm trying to find the time to do a finished ink or graphite drawing of this one and fill in some of the details. I'd also love to try my hand at some of the other characters or settings from Garths' series, as I absolutely love his books.

i LOVE the abhorsen trilogy :D i used to read them when i was younger...
i was lucky enough to meet Garth Nix at a book signing.. which made me fall in love with the story all over again. Everything about him and his works is so magical and intruiging... have you read any of his other works?

and i adore this.. best fan art out there, i reckon, even if it's just a concept

Thanks, Rolf. I had a bunch more of the characters in the planning, but just haven't had the time to do anything with them. In fact, this is really way unfinished. For the final ink, I'd redraw it and tighten up a few areas and such.

Thank you for the fave, also!

Personally, I think the books would make great movies...as long as Hollywood doesn't completely botch them. I love them because they're such a unique trilogy, pretty much lacking the typical cliches of the fantasy genre. I'm making my boyfriend read them right now, actually lol It would be great if you did more illustrations of the stories. It's something I'd like to do, as well, actually. I have a few favorite books that left really well-defined images in my mind that I would love to put to paper.

I was instantly hooked! Knowing Hollywood, they would do something really weird to the storyline and try to make it some type of horror story instead of the fantasy (with creepy elements) story it is.

I would like to do some more characters and situations. I think the imagery is wonderful, and it would be fun developing the cultures, architecture, and clothing of the different peoples.

Wellwell. Firstatall, the body on the floor looks supreme! Couldn't be (much) better with the smoke and the plants. Only her face looks a bit twisted, especially her right eye in my oppinion. No need to mention, that all the stuff on her and all the patterns and objects look awesome as usual ;)

Thanks so much for the comments, Jaro.

Usually in concepts, I'm primarily concerned with getting the idea on paper. I'll go back in whenever I re-draw it and correct all the anatomy and such. That being said, I like the freshness of the concepts sometimes over the very structured approach to the finished pencil or ink. I have a tendency to beat the paper to death with all the detail, so I'm trying to practice some ideas without a lot of detail. This was one of those to come out after I read the books by Garth Nix.

Hopefully, the finished work will be posted in the near future, and I'll be sure to pay close attention to the face. Thanks!

yeah, interresting to hear that, because I had some similar experiences lately. I more and more trend to let some of my sketches un-inked or unfinished (just pencil lines for example), just because I often got the feeling (or the sad result..) that my ink would make it look more finished, but ruin the "life-likeness" of it, f.e. a face or something. even if it are only milimeter that change/vary from pencil to ink - often these are the milimeters that make the difference.

my pleasure anyway bob ;)

Mine, too. I can't say the last time I enjoyed some books as much. I really don't get to read a lot of fiction anymore because of my scheule, but I had a great time with Garth Nix's books. I'm going to try and read the rest of his in the near future.

In my opinion "The keys.." are not as good as "The Abhorsen Tale", but I liked them pretty much :3 You should try "The Witchers tale" by Andrzej Sapkowski. Hes a polish witter and, yeah, I love his books *.*
