I've been reading manga for a number of years, and enjoy many of the different styles and approaches that the art form takes. Finally, around September of 2006, I had enough time in-between other projects to try and do some of my own.

Knowing that the work would be colored in Photoshop, I wanted to simplify things quite a bit, so I layed down the most basic linework that I could. I must admit, it was not an easy task for one who is used to defining texture and shadow with ink alone.

This is the first piece that came out of those sessions.

I don't get a lot of practice doing coloration on the computer, so please excuse what are obviously "beginner's follies." I realize I still have a lot to learn, and other artists who consistently delve into the medium here on DA are a great encouragement as I view what they have done.

The second attempt, called "Definition of Terms," can be seen here. This will also be colored in Photoshop.

The inked linework for "Messenger" can be viewed here."

OMG! Colour!! What're you trying to do to me here???
Just when I think that I've got you figured out, you go & do a coloured piece :giggle:

All joking aside, this is really great!
Although manga really isn't my kinda thing, I really like how you've approached this. It's manga, but it's still your style which is great.
The colouring is fab. I've never really been able to get a hang of cel-style colouring in photoshop, but you've nailed it =D

Great work Bob! I look forward to seeing more colour pieces in the future.

OMG! *goes ballistic* This is the first time I've seen a really brightly colored work from you, and the second manga one as well! I'll say that your experience in patterning, inking, and contrasts is really kicking your manga foray pieces into high gear, and making them quite distinctive from a lot of the generic stuff on DA. I love her gown, the colors (the greens and jewel-tone purples and blues are gorgeous), the simple background that pops her out, and the design.

While I'm more fond of your realistic pencil and ink work, this is a beautiful experiment. XD Glad you're always experimenting with stuff, Bob.

You may be a beginner, but your coloring is very good :)

I love the details in the cuffs, dress, braids and sword whilst it is less details the your normal it is wonderfully rich in details for manga which I generally find too simple for my tastes :lol
